Nestled in northeast Missouri, Wakonda State Park, composed of land that once was mined of gravel used to surface Missouri’s secondary highways, has been transformed into a recreation area featuring six lakes, hiking and bicycling trails, and a rare sand prairie.
The clear lake waters attract thousands of waterfowl such as Canada geese, snow geese, mallards, snowy egrets and great blue herons during the migratory seasons. The lakes also offer anglers a chance at catching largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Two of the lakes have boat ramps. Non-motorized jonboats and canoes can be rented at the park office.
Sand that was dug up during the gravel excavations was piled in small mounds, creating a landscape of rolling sand ridges that have developed into a rare sand prairie. Also comprised of the excavated sand is the 20,000-square-foot swimming beach along Wakonda Lake, providing a great place to lounge in the sun or get in a game of sand volleyball.
Eighty-six campsites, a mix of basic, electric and sewer/electric/water, are available to guests wishing to extend their stay. Wakonda State Park also has four recreational trailers available for rent. Both the campground and recreational trailers are nestled near one of the park’s lakes.
